What to Wear to a Sedona Maternity Photo Shoot
Planning what to wear for your Sedona maternity photo shoot can feel overwhelming at first—but it doesn’t have to be. Your outfits play such an important role in the feeling of your images. They help tell the story of this season while complementing Sedona’s incredible landscape.
When clients book with me, one of the first conversations we have is around styling because the right wardrobe can completely transform how your photos feel. My biggest goal is always this: creating images that feel elevated and artistic while still feeling like you.

Here are four things to remember when planning outfits for your Sedona maternity photo shoot.
1. Think About the Season
The season you choose for your Sedona maternity photo shoot should guide your outfit choices.
Spring & Summer
These seasons lend themselves beautifully to movement, softness, and lighter fabrics.
Some of my favorite options:
Light flowing dresses
Two-piece sets (crop top + skirt combinations)
Gauzy linen pants with an oversized button-up
Sheer fabrics
Crochet textures
Swimsuits for creek sessions or artistic maternity portraits
Fabric wraps for a partially covered, more editorial feel
Sedona’s warmer seasons create space for more skin, softer textures, and natural movement. If showing a little more of your bump feels aligned with you, these months can be perfect for that.

Fall & Winter
Winter sessions create an entirely different mood—cozy, layered, and intimate.
Beautiful additions include:
Oversized cardigans
Chunky sweaters
Layers over dresses
Oversized button-ups
Scarves
Knit textures
One of my favorite styling tricks is adding just one extra layer between outfits. Changing a sweater or scarf creates variety in your gallery without needing an entirely new outfit.

Don’t Forget Shoes
For spring, summer, and even fall in Sedona, I often love photographing clients barefoot. It creates a grounded, relaxed feeling and adds to that connection with nature and the outdoors.
During colder months, comfort comes first—boots or neutral closed-toe shoes usually photograph beautifully.
2. Choose Colors That Complement Sedona
One of the most important styling choices for your Sedona maternity photo shoot is color.
Sedona’s red rocks already create so much visual richness, so I typically recommend colors that support the landscape rather than compete with it.
My favorite palettes:
Cream
Ivory
Warm white
Beige
Sand
Taupe
Sage green
Earthy browns
Muted clay tones
If family members are included, think less about matching and more about coordinating.
The goal is:
Colors that complement each other
Similar undertones
Variation through texture instead of bold color changes
For example:
Outfit one: cream + linen textures
Outfit two: sage + soft neutral layers
Outfit three: warm tan + crochet details
Textures create visual interest while keeping the overall look cohesive.
I usually recommend 2–3 outfits per maternity session for variety while keeping the gallery cohesive.

3. Decide How Much Bump Exposure Feels Right
One of the first questions I ask every maternity client is: How much bump exposure feels comfortable to you? There is no right answer—only what feels authentic.
If showing your bump feels exciting to you, some beautiful options are:
A two-piece set with a skirt and top
Linen pants and an open button-up
Unbuttoned jeans with a fitted tank
Swimsuits during summer sessions
Blankets or fabric styling
Sheer layers that show shape without feeling fully exposed
You absolutely do not need to show skin for your maternity photos to feel beautiful.
Some of my favorite maternity images are fully covered and focus more on connection, movement, and emotion.
We always style around your comfort level.

4. Stay True to Who You Are
This is the most important one. Your Sedona maternity photo shoot should still feel like you.
Yes—it can be fun to wear something a little more elevated or romantic than your everyday wardrobe. But if you’re uncomfortable in what you’re wearing, that feeling often shows up in your photos.
I want your session to reflect:
Who you are as a person
Who you are becoming as a mother
The connection within your family
The feeling of this season of life
Comfort creates confidence—and confidence photographs beautifully.

A lot of feeling comfortable comes from what you’re wearing. The rest? That’s on me.
I guide every client through posing, movement, and creating a relaxed environment so you can focus less on what to do and more on being present.
If styling feels overwhelming, I’m always available to help. My client guide includes wardrobe inspiration and outfit guidance, and I love helping clients refine their vision before session day.
I’m so excited to capture more mamas and families in this beautiful season and create something that feels deeply personal during your Sedona maternity photo shoot.
